San Francisco starts cold ironing for cruise
The Port of San Francisco has become the first port in California to provide shoreside power for cruise ships.
The port is one of only a handful in the world to provide cold ironing for cruise ships at berth.
Mayor Gavin Newsom said that the area is “demonstrating that doing right by the environment doesn’t come at the expense of jobs and economic growth”, adding that the initiative means not just cleaner local air, but welcoming a growing number of cruise ships – with the tourist dollars they bring to San Francisco.
