Algeciras Bay Port Authority has agreed a series of very modest container traffic figures over the next five years.
In 2008, it believes box traffic will decline by 6% and overall traffic by 1.8%. For next year, there will be no overall growth at all, while containers numbers will be 5.7% lower than those registered in 2007.
However, the opening of the Hanjin terminal 2010 should boost traffic by 15% that year and by 26% in the following year.
Maersk, for its part, has told the port community that it will not be able to guarantee similar levels of traffic in 2008 to those it handled at the port in 2007, when its terminal handled 3.5m teu. This message is aimed directly at port unions, who have yet to sign a collective bargaining agreement.
