The northeast England port of Teesport could lose the equivalent of a quarter of its total annual throughput following the announcement that Corus is to close its steelmaking facilities on Teesside, with the direct loss of 1,700 jobs, at the end of January.

As well as handling up to 2.5m tonnes of steel exports a year from Teesside Cast Products through Tees Dock, PD Teesport handles 1.5m tonnes of coal imports and between 5m and 6m tonnes a year of iron ore imports.
The Corus announcement came just three weeks PD Ports was sold by Babcock & Brown Infrastructure to Canadian-based Brookfield Asset Management.
