Emission-free shipping initiative grows

Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) is now actively participating in the Getting to Zero Coalition. The global initiative, which now counts more than 90 companies from all areas of the maritime sector as members, is committed to international decarbonisation. The goal is to develop emission-free and economically viable ocean-going vessels by 2030.

By bringing together all those involved in the maritime transport chain – from ship financing to construction and shipping to ports and freight companies – the project has the potential to develop a marketable solution for CO2-free shipping in a timely manner.

The Getting to Zero Coalition is being promoted by the Global Maritime Forum, the Friends of Ocean Action and the World Economic Forum. The alliance was announced at the United Nations climate summit in New York on 23 September 2019 and is supported by major governments and intergovernmental organisations.

Participation in the Getting to Zero Coalition is just one of the many measures taken by the HPA to reduce emissions in the port. For example, as part of the IAPH’s Clean Marine Fuels Working Group, the HPA has been working on the development and testing of safe decarbonisation of fuels in the maritime sector for years.
