Oakland inks 10-year renewable energy deal

The Port of Oakland has entered into a 10-year agreement with the East Bay Municipal Utility District to source renewable energy generated from EBMUD’s wastewater treatment plant in West Oakland

Beginning July 1, 2025, the port will buy renewable energy certificates at a fixed rate of US$36 each. Each certificate equates to one megawatt-hour (MWh) of clean electricity added to the grid.

The deal is expected to contribute between 11,300 and 17,700 MWh of renewable energy annually, enough to meet 10% to 15% of the port’s total electricity demand.
