Environmental awards have been handed out to five UK ports in acknowledgement of Associated British Ports'' commitment to protecting local environments. Swansea, Talbot, Barry, Cardiff and Newport have all received Port Environmental Review System (PERS) accreditation, a mark of their eco-conscious status.
It will be capable of handling 9m tonnes of cargo annually, although this will be extended to 15m tonnes depending on demand.
The ports' measures included recycling of waste paper and old mobile phones and landscaping port roundabouts and brownfield sites. PERS accreditation provides independent verification of ABP's South Wales ports' achievements in management of the environment, and also puts the ports closer to achieving ISO14001 status, an internationally recognised environmental management benchmark. ABP is now seeking PERS for its other 16 ports.
