‘Green’ award for India’s Krishnapatnam Port
India’s Krishnapatnam Port has been awarded the ‘Golden Peacock Environmental Management Award’ for its ‘green’ operations and contribution to overall economic development in the region.
The port, which is one of India’s fastest growing seaports, has implemented a number of green initiatives over the years including the electrification of the railway network from all storage yards, which it says has led to a reduction in carbon dioxide by 24,935 tonnes as well as the reduction of diesel consumption and GHG emissions.
“We strongly believe that the progress and welfare of society is not merely the responsibility of governments alone rather every organisation should contribute and be part of social welfare,” said Mr Sasidhar, managing director.
Currently, the port is in the process of electrifying all its cranes to reduce diesel consumption and is working towards solar and wind energy to reduce fossil fuel usage.
In addition, Krishnapatnam Port has installed solar lights and solar water heaters, planted over 30 lakh trees within the port and more than 50,000 trees in the surrounding villages, established gas connections for villagers and adopted Nellore town traffic lights and public building for maintaining greenery around the areas.
Krishnapatnam also works to reduce water requirements through the use of atomizers, re-uses water collected from guard ponds, recycles sewage for green belt development and treats and recycles truck wash water for dust suppression.
“Going forward, our goal is to achieve sustainable development and maximize the positive impact by creating value for the society. We will continue to invest in education, skill promotion, job creation, health and safety programmes, environment management that leads to overall economic development in the region,” Mr Sasidhar added.
The port also has an Environment Health and Security programme that encourages continuous improvement in environment protection and includes waste management, pollution control, resource conservation and use of renewable resources.
Krishnapatnam Port is a deep water all-weather port operated by the Government of Andhra Pradesh and the Krishnapatnam Port Company Limited.
