At least fourteen ports and terminals will benefit from the UK’s Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC).

These ports and terminals are amongst fifty-five projects that have earned a share of a GB£23m fund to support the development of innovative technologies aimed at encouraging zero emissions.
Mark Simmonds, director of policy at the British Ports Association, said: “"The extraordinary breadth and depth of the winning projects showcases the maritime sector's ambition regarding decarbonisation and clean technologies.
"As well as demonstrating the viability of innovative technology, we hope that the Government recognise that a larger, longer-term green maritime fund can turbocharge the industry's journey to net-zero emissions.”
Winning projects
Winners include the Freeport East Energy Hub Feasibility Study, including the Port of Felixstowe, that will look into the potential for Freeport East to become both a net-zero port and a net-zero energy hub for third parties and the adjacent region.
The Mayflower feasibility study is a collaboration including Associated British Ports (ABP), to realise the potential of a green hydrogen supply to the Port of Immingham for greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction of port operations and shipping.
Including the Cromarty Firth Port Authority, the Direct Ammonia Fuel Cells for Maritime Propulsion feasibility study comprises optimisation of electrodes for Ammonia conversion, developing cell fabrication technology, preparing and building reactors to monitor performance at scale and to establish longer term durability testing.
The Vertically Integrated Cloud Based Ports project includes PD Ports’ Teesport. It proposes a cloud-based industrial microgrid for ports deep electrification that simultaneously reduces costs and emissions, and hence reduces the impact of ports and shipping sector on the environment.
The Shipping, Hydrogen & Port Ecosystems UK (SHAPE UK) will help identify the barriers, infrastructure and regulatory considerations that will enable port managers to install a “Green Hydrogen” generation and storage system within Portsmouth International Port. It will also supply a working vessel to the port authority, powered by an engine using green hydrogen.
