GreenPort Congress 2026 will be welcoming back a well-known figure as Chair of the global forum at Portsmouth International Port, UK, 7–9 October.

Dr. Mark van der Veen, Director of the Graduate School of Business at the University of Amsterdam, co-Chaired last year’s GreenPort Congress in Malta, and has been a Moderator at previous annual meetings of the port community.

Mark’s focus in teaching and research has always been on the interaction between business and sustainability, and his PhD explored the organization and success of green product development projects. His special interest is in the strategic, economic and organizational aspects of port environmental management.

He has been involved in several national and international studies in this area, including ECOPORTS in Europe, and auditing and training projects in Vietnam and Cambodia.

Looking ahead to his role as Chair, he said: “At a critical point for the sector, GreenPort Congress 2026 will drive practical discussion and collaboration, with Portsmouth offering an outstanding real‑world backdrop.”

The Congress brings senior stakeholders from across the ports and shipping sectors together, offering practical ways to reduce carbon footprints and adopt more environmentally sensitive practices, both vital to future success.

Portsmouth is a driving force in sustainability efforts, aiming to achieve net zero port operations by 2035 and become one of the UK’s first zero-emission ports by 2050.

Supported by initiatives such as the Portsmouth Green Partnership Charter, and led by the host Portsmouth International Port, this strong commitment makes it a fitting location for GreenPort Congress 2026.
