Deadline looms for US port funding

US port projects are running out of time to gain the federal money they need as Congress adjourned for summer recess without authorising any new investments in the area.

This also applies to port authorities which are aiming to see a change to the final WRDA legislation in relation to the Harbour Maintenance Tax.

JOC.com reported that the ‘controversial’ provision to the legislation would stop non-port-related bodies from tapping money out of the trust fund and mean lots more investment into the country’s maritime gateway for dredging and jetty maintenance.

Lawmakers have requested a time to debate the WRDA bill when they return in September, but time will be rare due to an upcoming election in November.

If Congress fails to act on the legislation in this session, or authorise any new money under a Water Resources Development Act, all projects may have to wait until next year.
