Antaq to allow more concessions
In Brazil, 51 requests for new private port installations have been referred to the national waterway transport agency Agência Nacional de Transportes Aquaviários (ANTAQ).
Of these, 37 relate to dedicated port terminals, requiring investment of $1bn. A further 12 would be private transhipment terminals, costing around $156m to implement. The other two would be tourist port facilities.
ANTAQ director general Adalberto Tokarski said that this latest round of requests is in addition to the group of 199 that ANTAQ has already examined. Furthermore, he noted that, while revisions to the port law have been criticised, it has enabled the number of private terminals in Brazil to expand.
Since 2013, when it came into effect, the number of private terminals in the country have increased by 50% to 79 new terminals, attracting investment of $5.2bn. Last year alone saw permission given for 12 projects to go ahead worth $1.1bn.
