Big and green Savannah
Four new super post-panamax cranes have arrived at the Port of Savannah, Georgia, on board Dockwises Tern, a specially constructed heavy-lift vessel.
The port authority said the new additions were aimed at reducing operating costs while also increasing both efficiency and flexibility.
The electric cranes, capable of handling ships of 22 containers across, have been designed in Finland and built by Konescranes with the environment in mind.
“The cranes will generate more than 30% of their total energy requirements by tapping into the power of gravity and kinetic energy,” said GPA’s director of engineering and maintenance Wilson Tillotson. “For every one hour each of these cranes is operational, it uses its own power for approximately 18 minutes.”
The new additions bring the number of cranes at the Garden City Terminal to 23, making it the largest fleet of ship-to-shore cranes at any one facility in the country.
