BA Terminal 6 to be re-tendered
The troubled Terminal 6 at Buenos Aires is to be once again put out to tender, according the General Ports Administration (AGP), the state controlled organisation which overseas national ports.
This will require investment of $95.65m up to 2006 and will make it possible to boost exports by $10 billion.
The move, for which no timetable has yet been announced, is able to go ahead following the conclusion of negotiations to resolve benefits issues covering more than 300 former workers.
Salary payments ceased in 1995, when concessionaire Intefema ran into financial difficulties, forcing it to declare itself bankrupt in 1996. Ferroport was then granted special use rights for the terminal, but also stopped paying its workers in 1998. Under the new master plan for the port, Terminal 6 will become an exclusive logistics handling area, which should then allow Buenos Aires to claim third-generation port status.
