Açu mega-port takes shape

A new mega-port complex is taking shape at Aç u to the north of Rio de Janeiro, which is being bankrolled by Brazils state investment bank BNDES and by the privately owned LLX. This will serve an area the size of Manhattan Island, where it is hoped that up to $20bn of new investment will be made. The port itself is costing $850m, while a new coal and natural gas electricity generating station is also planned.

Currently under way is the environmental impact assessment; at the same time, the company is trying to convince local residents of the advantages of having major new port that will handle both dry bulk and containers.
