Brazil needs private sector investment

A Brazilian parliamentary representative has called for greater private sector investment in port infrastructure to support growth in the agricultural sector.

She claims that the $1.6bn investment set aside for ports under the country’s Accelerated Growth Programme (PAC) is insufficient to satisfy future demand; the representative calculates up to $30bn is needed.

The official also criticised port legislation introduced in 2008, claiming it had actually restricted participation of the private sector in operating new terminals and that the law needs urgent revision.
