Automation for Stockton

The implementation of the Tidework’s TOS system is part of the wider M-580 Marine Highway federal project aimed at moving ocean shipping containers by barge instead of trucks between Oakland and the Central Valley in California.

Stockton will receive Tidework’s Spinnaker Planning Management System and Stargate, Spinnaker’s integrated gate utility.

Mark Tollini, deputy director, Port of Stockton, said to Port Strategy: “We considered other systems, but wanted an integrated gate-yard-vessel solution with EDI capabilities and communication standards to allow for interoperability with other container terminals. We also needed a cost effective solution that could be installed in a very short timeframe. Tideworks’ hosted model fills both of those requirements.”

Mr Tollini explained that the TOS is part of a development initiative to enhance the port’s omni-modal system and fully-leverage under-utilised cargo-handling capabilities, which will increase revenue and efficiency.

He added: “In addition to the TOS, the port has procured additional equipment such as mobile harbour cranes and made dockside improvements all as part of the port’s long-term growth strategy.”

Tidework will also provide project management, software configuration and installation and user training to the port as part of the TOS package. The system is expected to go live during the second quarter of 2013.
