Barreiro necessary to allow Lisbon reinvention
Manuela Patrício, director of Port Terminals and Logistics at Lisbon Port Authority, has defended the decision to build a new container terminal at Barreiro on the southern bank of the Tagus river in Lisbon.
She noted that, while the project has yet to be confirmed, there was a real need for a new box handling facility.
“The capacity of the port of Lisbon depends on the industrial capacity of the region where it operates,” she said, adding that building the new terminal is extremely important for the port in terms of container handling.
“The Barreiro project has come about because a port, like any other business, dies if it does not reinvent itself,” she said. “The port either languishes or looks into alternatives. We are awaiting the [necessary] studies and then we will be able to discuss them,” said Ms Patrício in response to concerns raised as to the accessibility by sea of the new terminal.
Other options, such as expanding the existing terminal at Alcântara had been vetoed because of the environmental impact, she added.
