Of this, $366m will be for investment in new terminal facilities and $51m in leasing fees to be paid to state port authorities over the 25-year period of the concessions.

Of the six, three will be grain terminals at Outeiro (Belém); a fourth grain terminal will be up for grabs at Vila do Conde; and one grain and one fertilizer terminal will be on offer at Santarém.

The Federal Audit Court (TCU) has also given the go ahead for a further 20 areas to be tendered once the exact areas to be offered to the private sector have been defined.

According to ports minister Helder Barbalho, getting the endorsement of the TCU is key to launching tenders more quickly, given the two years of accumulated experience that the organisation has in already putting 29 terminal areas out to tender in Santos and Pará state.

Separately, Mr Barbalho also announced that the port of Santos will receive new investment up to 2018 of $77m.
