India unveils green hydrogen plant
India has taken a significant step toward maritime decarbonisation with the commissioning of a 1 MW green hydrogen power plant at Kandla Port.
Developed by the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), the plant is part of a broader 10 MW project aimed at boosting clean energy adoption in port infrastructure.
The facility was inaugurated by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, who praised it as ‘a major step towards fulfilling PM Shri Narendra Modi’s 2030 vision’.
“DPA has turned that vision into reality, a shining example of speed, scale and skill under Maritime India Vision 2030,” said Sonowal.
Referring to the Prime Minister’s foundation stone-laying for the full 10 MW project in May 2025, Sonowal said the 1 MW module set ‘a new benchmark for implementation in India’s green hydrogen ecosystem’.
“I appreciate the engineers of L&T and the leadership of DPA for delivering this complex project with remarkable speed and precision,” he said.
Union Minister of State for MoPSW, Shantanu Thakur, also applauded the effort, saying, “The commissioning of this green hydrogen plant at DPA highlights India’s growing leadership in clean energy, innovation and self-reliance.”
The plant will produce around 140 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, contributing significantly to sustainable port operations.
Earlier this year, Sonowal also unveiled infrastructure projects worth ₹570 billion (€5.63 billion) to enhance Kandla Port’s capacity and operational efficiency, aiming to transform it into a hub for both dry and liquid cargo while boosting employment and reducing vessel turnaround times.
