SSA Marine electrifies forklift fleet

The conversion of 44 forklifts makes Berth 55 SSA Marine’s first terminal to operate entirely with zero-emissions equipment.

“Achieving this sustainability milestone at Berth 55 reinforces SSA Marine’s commitment to environmental responsibility, operational efficiency, and innovation,” said Meghan Weinman, vice president of sustainability at SSA Marine.

“We are proud to partner with the Port of Los Angeles on this ambitious project and we’re confident that Berth 55 will serve as a blueprint for future initiatives.”

The new electric fleet includes 12 heavy-duty 4,500 kg and 32 light-duty 1,360 kg Hyster forklifts. SSA Marine estimates the switch will eliminate the use of nearly 200,000 litres of propane annually and reduce CO2 emissions by around 264 metric tonnes.

The initiative was the result of a three-year collaboration between SSA Marine, the Port of Los Angeles, and several stakeholders dedicated to environmental progress in maritime logistics.

“SSA Marine has been a longtime tenant at the Port of Los Angeles,” said Michael DiBernardo, deputy executive director of the port.

“Their early achievement of an emissions-free operation at Berth 55 – five years ahead of our 2030 target – is a major accomplishment we appreciate.”
