APM shows its credentials
APM Terminals integration of the new US Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) with its existing security system, could have implications beyond the US borders.
Ron Babski, in his role in charge of APM’s Portsmouth terminal’s security arrangements, has integrated the TWIC credential into the existing APM Terminals security protocol as the single and primary means of electronic access, adding the TWIC badge format to the APM Terminals security ID.
The new credential regulations, scheduled to go into effect on 15 April 2009, require authorised personnel to show their TWIC cards to security personnel stationed at entrances and throughout a port facility.
Mr Babski said: “We are very proud of this integration effort and the fact that TWIC will be used as the single and primary means of electronic access.”
In addition to approximately 1,000 APM Terminals’ employees, longshoremen, vendors and other authorised personnel entering the facility on a regular basis, over 3,000 truck drivers making as many as 7,000 container pick-ups or deliveries each week were taken into account.
