Brazil undaunted by box downturn

Container terminals in Brazil are forecasting throughput decreases of up to 12% this year; in 2008, throughput rose by almost 4% to around 4.63m teu.

Despite the expected downturn, major operators are to continue investing in upgrading facilities.Two operators have already confirmed their intention to introduce new infrastructure. Santos Brazil is investing $106m in lengthening its quay by 220 metres. Sepetiba container terminal in the Port of Itaguaí will also invest $51m to add a new berth.
