Gulftainer bid to operate Wilmington Delaware
Gulftainer is negotiating a deal to operate the Port of Wilmington Delaware with owner and current operator Diamond State Port Corp. (DSPC)
DSPC, a corporate entity of the State of Delaware, and UAE-headquartered global port operator Gulftainer both confirmed the proceedings to Port Strategy but said no further comment could be made until after DSPC’s board considers the deal on 6 April.
Port of Wilmington Delaware, stated it can “confirm that the Diamond State Port Corp. (DSPC) is in discussions with Gulftainer to operate the Port of Wilmington, Delaware in the context of a long term concession agreement.”
It added: “The next step is for the DSPC Board of Directors to approve the proposed deal. A DSPC Board meeting is currently scheduled for the 6th of April.”
Diverse cargo
The 308-acre deep water port, located at the confluence of the Delaware and Christina Rivers, has a diverse cargo mix and includes eight berths, six cold storage warehouses and two dry cargo warehouses.
It also features a distribution centre serving 200m US and Canadian consumers and a Mid-Atlantic export hub for automobile and rolling stock cargo to the Middle East, West Africa and Central America.
The port had a total of 362 vessel calls in 2017 and 2,428 tons of total containerised cargo.
