Hybrid straddles advance Hamburg electrification

The Q4 2025 order will supply HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort with new-design Konecranes Noell NSC 644 EHY machines for container transport, stacking and landside handling, replacing ageing diesel-driven equipment to cut fuel use and modernise operations.

“Choosing their proven hybrid solution helps us to meet our CO2-reduction goals while maintaining the high productivity we need in daily operations,” 

Optimum performance

The units combine diesel generator sets with onboard batteries, supporting hybrid port equipment deployment while maintaining performance standards, with commissioning scheduled by the end of 2026.

Each straddle carrier is built on Konecranes’ latest modular design concept, enabling simplified upgrades to alternative powertrains, including fully battery-electric or hydrogen configurations.

The approach gives terminal operators flexibility to adapt drive systems as regulatory pressures, energy strategies and emissions reduction targets evolve. A powerlift system also enhances operator comfort by elevating the driver smoothly to the cabin.

Konecranes said the order reinforces its Ecolifting roadmap, a staged pathway to zero tailpipe emissions through renewable diesel, hybrid and electrified fleets.

HHLA already operates Konecranes equipment across several of its Hamburg terminals.
