Italian ports accelerate shore power rollout

The order includes the supply of PowerFeed, PowerReach and PowerMove technologies, which will enable cruise, container and RoRo vessels to connect to shore power while at berth.

Continued deployment

Cavotec’s PowerMove technology is an automated mobile, tyre-based, or towable shore power unit, frequently used for cruise ships.

PowerReach is a fixed-boom system designed for high-capacity, heavy-duty shore power connections, while PowerFeed is an automated cable management system that manages cable payout, helping ensure seamless connection and safety during power transfer.

This deployment marks another step in accelerating port electrification strategies as operators seek to address port emission challenges and meet tightening regulatory requirements.

Cavotec’s latest contract builds on its recent activity in Europe. In February, the company enabled Europe’s first car carrier shore power connection in Bremerhaven, where the 200-metre pure car and truck carrier Lake Shirasagi successfully connected to shore-side electricity.

That milestone highlighted the growing adoption of shore power technologies across vessel segments and reinforced the role of port electrification in cutting port emission levels.
