European Commission backs IMO
Kitack Lim, IMO secretary-general, and Violeta Bulc, the European transport commissioner, have had their first meeting since Mr Lim’s appointment.
Ms Bulc confirmed that the European Commission were fully supportive of the principle that shipping should be governed by an international regulator frame work developed by the IMO.
The pair were discussing climate change, emissions, passenger safety and the need to promote quality shipping.
In regards to shipping emissions and environmental regulations, Ms Bulc pledge her support for the active cooperation between the Commission and the IMO.
The European commissioner for transport posted on Twitter after the meeting: “Excellent discussion about decarbonisation and quality shipping.”
