Arica fears loss of traffic to Ilo
Port workers at the northern Chilean port of Arica say they are concerned by developments in the concession at the southern Peruvian port of Ilo, where a Bolivian company could potentially become the new concessionaire.
This could, they warn, lead to cargo from Bolivia that is currently shipped via Arica switching to Ilo, in line with policy outlined by the country’s president Evo Morales.
According to Víctor Ramírez, the secretary of Trade Union Number 1 at the Port of Arica, the Bolivian government has been seeking an alternative, Peruvian outlet for some years, although this is not the favoured option of business in that country.
Furthermore, he stressed that Arica has been able to improve the service offered to the Bolivians year on year.
“The layout of Ilo Port isn’t the most satisfactory and any investment in it is going to take place over the longer term,” he said.
