Brazil announces go ahead for new tenders

Mr Araújo had only been appointed to his former post on January 2 of this year, replacing César Borges. Despite being in office for just nine months, he recently obtained approval for new tenders to be issued for three terminals in Santos and five in the state of Pará. These had previously become snagged up in a prolonged analysis by the country’s Accounts Tribunal (TCU).

The new minister is now in the process of holding a series of meetings, with the expectations that the aforementioned tenders can be issued later this year.

Commenting on the decision by the TCU, Mr Araújo noted: “It’s a historic moment for Brazil’s port sector. We have made a start on the bidding process for public areas in ports, given that there is pent-up demand in each region. In this first stage alone, we will attract private investment of $559m.”

Each of the new concessions on offer will be for a period of 25 years, with the ex-minister stressing there was much interest from potential bidders.
