Brazil ditches Para tender
Brazil has cancelled an auction to lease a port terminal area in the northern state of Para due to a lack of interest, according to Reuters.
A government spokesperson said that the port will still auction three other terminals at Santos, Latin America’s largest port.
It is hoped that the terminal auctions will provide much needed funds for the cash-strapped government as Brazil faces its worst recession in 25 years.
Three areas in Santos will be offered at an action in Sao Paulo starting at 9am local time on Wednesday (11:00 GMT).
A federal government statement reported that two of the three terminals to be leased will move paper or cellulose from Santos and the third will export grains in the Ponta da Praia area of the port.
The company that wins the operation will need to upgrade the infrastructure at the terminal and is said to be required to move 3.9m tonnes per year by the third year of the contract, and 4.1m tonnes by the fifth year.
