Buenaventura terminal invests
Columbias new container terminal, Buenaventura, (TCBuen), has become the first Latin American terminal to implement new optical character recognition (OCR) systems and Differential GPS (DGPS) quay cranes, yard cranes and input processes.
The new terminal, sponsored by Spanish terminal operator, Grup Maritim Terminal de Contenidors de Barcelona (GMTCB), and Columbian developer, Grupo Empresarial de Pacifico SA (GEPSA), have invested US$3.5m in the new technology.
The OCR installation was completed in December 2012 and allows real time traceability of all containers entering and leaving the terminal. The software also captures the container number and weight of every vehicle.
Victor Muñoz Cinca, terminal manager, Buenaventura, said: “This integrated OCR and DGPS automated terminal operating system (TOS) captures real time data container using cameras, scanners and satellite devices to improve productivity, safety and traceability of cargo.”
The OCR system on the quay cranes automatically identifies the container number whenever the crane loads or unloads. The DGPS is used to confirm the information against the scheduled containers, ensuring greater security, reliability and efficiency, whilst minimising transit times and operating costs.
GMTCB has also launched a project for the SURESTOW system which verifies positions of all containers onboard a ship via satellite. The system is expected to be implemented in March 2014.
