The tender is open to both national and international consultants, either working separately or as part of a consortium. However, they must show a track record in the management or development of engineering projects, as well as having supervised environmental studies.

All bids must be received by December 21, 2017.

The Port of San Antonio has issued or is about to issue several other tenders linked with this same project, including that of looking into the total cost of the build.

Chile, it is argued, needs to build a deepwater port in order to remain competitive in the container handling business. Various sites are under consideration: some close to San Antonio, others near to main rival Valparaiso, both of which service the national capital, Santiago.
