Bringing dredging waste back to life

With growing concerns regarding the environmental impact of dredging waste, Virotec believes there is increasing scope for its ViroSoil technology – one of a range of solutions developed for the treatment of contaminated soils and waters.

“The application of our technology has specific implications for port management, providing a total solution to the treatment of both dredging waste and contaminated soils and sediments within the port areas that will not only result in stable substrata but will also enable the vegetation of otherwise contaminated and sterile sediment,” says Simon Tillotson, general manager at Virotec Europe.

The key reasons for using ViroSoil technology are its unique physical and chemical properties, which enable dredging waste to be safely processed and potentially turned into a commercial product,he says. “Central to our technology is a range of 18 reagents, which remove dissolved metals, neutralise acidity and control odour.

Specially developed as part of ViroSoil technology, we use the ViroBind reagent in dredging waste remediation.” The technology allows complete neutralisation of the acid-generating potential of a dredging waste, while fixing metals present in sediment in a non-leachable form, says Mr Tillotsen.
