Intense interest in second Chennai box terminal
Ten companies have purchased tender documents relating to the development of a second container terminal at Chennai.
These include NYK, MOL, CMA CGM, PSA, HPH, Evergreen, Container Corporation of India, Larsen & Toubro and Gammon India. A contract is expected to be awarded in September or October.
The new terminal will cost an estimated US$113.20m of which the port authority will supply US$23m and the private developer the balance.
In its second year of operation the new terminal is expected to handle 100,000TEUs rising to 600,000TEUs by the seventh year.
In terms of infrastructure, the terminal will have 826 metres of berthing line, of which 400 metres will have an alongside draught of 13.5m.
