JNPT now handling 50% of Indian box traffic
Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) reports that it now handles more than 50% of Indias container trade. However, construction of the third container terminal and plans to build a fourth mean the JNPT is also due to become a major regional hub.
Nevertheless in the meantime, infrastructure bottlenecks are creating major congestion.
Ravi Budhiraja, chairman of JNPT, emphasises that the current situation can be eased through the development of parking areas, the provision of additional container yards, the widening of roads and the provision of a separate corridor for passenger vehicles. All these works will be completed within 18 months Unfortunately, rail provider Concor is still only able to provide 9 or 10 rakes of container flats per day, whereas 12 or 13 are actually required to prevent build-up of containers within the port.
A report looking into ways of solving this problem is being prepared.
