Cargo handling in the Port of Kiel increased by 13.4% in the first half of the year to 2.7m tonnes. Further, utilisation of the Ostuferhafen part of the port has risen to more than 80%, underscoring the need to expand its capacity.
Strongest growth was recorded on the Kiel-Klaipeda ferry service which handled more than a million tons during the first half of the year, while parallel sea transport to and from Lithuania on the big RoPax ferry Lisco Maxima demonstrates how traffic can be moved from roads to ecologically advantageous sea routes.
