Thailand''s deepwater port of Laem Chabang is to get six new terminals in a tender believed to be worth $400m.
The tender will combine BOT with concession contracts but is for all six terminals as a single contract and operators will not be able to bid for individual terminals. The tender closes on 1 September.
The project will increase capacity by 4.5-6m TEUs annually compared with the 3.18 million TEUs handled at the port last year. The Thai government envisages completion of the vast expansion project within two years which has sparked concerns in the port community of overcapacity.
Laem Chabang has six terminals with a seventh due to be completed shortly.
The facilities are operated by various consortia including P&O Ports, APM Terminals, PSA International, Evergreen and HPH.
