Lisbon''s port authority, Administração do Porto de Lisboa (APL), is to abandon plans to build a new container terminal at Barreiro on the south bank of the River Tagus, following an adverse Environmental Impact Assessment.
Along with the Barreiro municipal authority and the Sea Ministry, APL is now said to be studying alternatives.
The initial EIA suggested that there would be no detrimental impacts to the environment from construction of the terminal, although this was later contradicted by more in-depth studies.
A public consultation also generated much unfavourable comment, too, with the Chamber of Commerce speaking out against the preferred location, in particular, and objecting to the Phase 2 expansion of the terminal. However, the Chamber continues to defend construction of a terminal within the municipality, but at a different location, which might mean moving it just a few hundred metres.
