Local ports help with relief operations

Difficulties in reaching the tsunami stricken areas can be overcome with the use of the multimodal facilities available in Johor which is close to Sumatra. The port says the multimodal synergy between Senai and PTP will enable effective redistribution of essential relief items by sea or air.

Both Senai and PTP has the capacity and capabilities to act as a staging point for international relief operations currently underway for the tsunami stricken areas and in particular, the devastated province of Aceh.

In Singapore, PSA said it would waive all handling charges at its terminals in the country for the transportation of relief supplies bound for victims of tsunami-stricken countries.

Westport in Port Klang Malaysia has helped co-ordinate a relief effort in the industry working with Goldstar Line, CMA CGM and Excel Shipping and Logistics to ship aid to Indonesia and Sri Lanka. “Westport will continue to serve those in need, ” said a spokesman.
