Manaus terminal operators in legal dispute

The two operators occupy sites bordering the Rio Negro, where they handle almost the entire cargo movement of the Port of Manaus and its free trade zone.

The dispute between them is focused on the extension of the river located in front of the terminals. Since 2014, Super Terminals has been waiting for a response from the national water transportation agency Agência Nacional de Transportes Aquaviários about its request for the installation of a floating dock there and the expansion of its storage yard.

While technically approved, no definitive thumbs-up has been given because of repeated legal challenges from dominant operator Porto Chibatão.

However, despite an arm of the Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management recently coming out in favour of the Super Terminais project, Porto Chibatão is now threatening further legal action, this time against federal agencies, if the floating dock goes ahead.
