Mogadishu mismanagement allegations
Somali Ports Authority has been accused of misusing government revenue at the port of Mogadishu.
While the facility generates significant revenue, a lot of it is allegedly lost through corruption and never reaches the state treasury. Smaller ports provide up to $50m a year for the economy, while Mogadishu returns just $12m.
In related news, two days after Mogadishu airport was attacked by fundamentalists, police in Somalia say they foiled a suicide attack by Islamic rebels on the city’s port. A hijacked petrol tanker was driven at speed towards the security checkpoint, only to have its tyres shot out before it could cause any damage.
