Mombasa reneges on dredging contract award

A contract had already been awarded to Jan de Nul, which had secured ¢8m ($11.6m) of backing from the Belgian government.However, Dredging International approached the Kenyan government with what it claimed was a better offer, a move that prompted approaches from competing dredgers Boskalis and Van Oord.

In a backwards move, the Kenyan government has now established an official deadline for bids. This turn-round has setback the much-needed dredging programme, which is now not expected to be completed until after 2010.
