The opposition political coalition in Australia is concerned about monopolies dominating Australia’s ports structure.

Coalition (centre right) regional development spokesman, Senator Barnaby Joyce told a grains industry conference in Melbourne that it was essential for farmers to retain good access to ports.

“There are competition issues that come in.... we are getting the domination of vital infrastructure by certain groups which basically means that you are dealing with a monopoly,” he said.

Senator Joyce said the role of government should be to isolate people from monopoly “rip offs”.
