A new infrastructure levy introduced by Napier Port as well as the majority of an insurance levy initiated in late 2017 are now being met by its shipping line callers.
The latter was initially applied to shippers, but since 1 April, it is understood carriers have commenced paying NZ$5.25 plus goods and services tax per teu.
According to Maersk Line, the additional port dues will in total entail NZ$30 for each teu and $60 for each feu or 45-foot container.
When announcing the insurance levy, Napier Port said it needed to generate additional funds as insurance costs “continue to come under increasing pressure”.
The port said its infrastructure levy was required to “build resilience” in contributing towards NZ$40m of targeted investment in infrastructure including a third tug to extend the port’s capability to manoeuvre larger vessels; new crane technology to increase productivity; a new fleet of container forklifts; and implementation of a secondary offsite container storage depot.
