Port Klang''s mega hub plans have been met with skepticism by a leading ports analyst.
Envisaged with an annual container capacity of 30m teu, the massive port-industrial city is to be able to handle more cargo than the two existing ports combined, according to Tan Sri Kong Cho Ha, chairman of Port Klang Authority (PKA) and Malacca Port Authority.
The plans have met a cool industry response with Neil Davidson, senior analyst Ports and Terminals at Drewry, summating concerns over capacity and need, TheStar website reported.
“The proposed new port would be a very long term project so would be looking at requirements in 10-20 years time so you can't necessarily view it in relation to the current utilisation level of the existing port," he said.
The planned Malaysian mega hub aims to target business at Singapore, which may prove harder than anticipated.
“While Port Klang has had recent success in winning market share from Singapore, Singapore is making significant moves to win this back (by making joint venture deals with major shipping line ………and by planning an entire new port complex at Tuas),” Davidson added.
