ETHIOPIA SEEKS PORT AT BERBERA
Officials from the landlocked state of Ethiopia have begun negotiations with the government of Somaliland regarding the use of its Red Sea port of Berbera.
Such was the interest in the project that the port authority had to extend the bidding deadline until 11 March with 24 companies buying the tender document.
Somaliland, which is not internationally recognised, broke away from Somalia in 1991. However, its government and also that of Ethiopia signed a joint trade agreement in 2003 which involved a commitment to improve transport links between the two states.
