Mombasa rejects four equipment bids

Surprisingly, only three of seven companies were able to meet the technical specifications required by the Port of Mombasa to supply eight cranes as part of a recent tender. The contract, which is worth _16m, will therefore be disputed by Kalmar, ZPMC and Reggiane following the disqualification of Fabtech International of Dubai, Liebherr, IMCC of Abu Dhabi and Dalian Heavy Industries.

PC REMBRANDT, BMT’s ship handling training and familiarisation software, was used to determine the wind and tidal conditions under which vessels will be able to enter and depart from the port with and without the support of tugs. The company also set out the strategy for beacon, buoy and light use in the area.

The cheapest bids for the two quayside gantry cranes came from ZPMC ($9.98m) and Kalmar ($10.91m), while ZPMC ($2.79m) was also cheapest in its bid for the two RMGs, with Reggiane ($5.4m) asking almost double. A similar scenario was also acted out in the contract for four RTGs, with ZPMC ($4.38m) edging out Reggiane ($4.56m) and Kalmar ($5.2m).

Mombasa’s search for new cranes has been highly controversial in that the initial tender had to be cancelled following accusations of interference by Cabinet Ministers.
