LNG ferry in Finland

The two companies signed a contract securing the ferry LNG fuel in Helsinki, and it is expected to start its route between Helsinki and Tallinn next year.

For the Megastar’s sea trial Skangas is delivering LNG directly at the Meyer wharf in Turku, once in operation Skangas will deliver their first LNG in Vestre hamnen in Helsinki.

An effective bunker operation by truck will take place as the ship will unload and load passengers. Megastar will be 212m long and will accommodate altogether 2800 passengers.

It is a dual-fuel ferry and can use both LNG and marine diesel as fuel. With LNG, the environmental performance will improve much by creating low emissions of Sulphur or particles, nitrogen and CO2.

Tommy Mattila, director marketing and sales at Skangas, added: “Skangas is very happy that Tallink has chosen Skangas as a supplier for the new Megastar ferry.”

He concluded: “Annually we perform around 1000 LNG bunker operations in the Nordic countries. Our recent partnership with Tallink underlines our capability of delivering according to the marine demands for efficient, safe and reliable LNG bunkering”.
