New hybrid Rotortug for Kotug

The new RT Evolution is the first in a series of two new Rotortugs for Kotug which are being built by Damen Shipyards.

Kotug’s ART 80-32 is designed by Canada’s Robert Allan Ltd and has a hybrid configuration of a combination of motor generators in the shaft line to ensure safety.

Rotortug said that its tug design distinguishes itself from others on the market by the use of a triangular propulsion configuration giving it superior manoeuvrability.

The company said the tug is also superior in terms of environmental performance with reduced fuel consumption of around 25% depending on its operational profile, reduced maintenance costs, reduced NO_x emissions of around 40% and reduced CO₂ of around 25%.

Kotug recently announced it has been selected as the Brunei Shell Petroleum Company’s exclusive towage provider for all LNG vessels at the Brunei LNG Terminal. The terminal is being serviced by its three 80 tonne Rotortugs – RT Champion, RT Leader and RT Tasman.

Rotortug meanwhile recently delivered the second in a series of four Rotortugs to new owner Elisabeth Ltd in Hong Kong. Built by Cheoy Lee Shipyards Ltd, the RT Endeavour combines high bollard pull over both working ends and strong steering force at all operational speeds. In addition, it’s said to offer improved fuel economy and operational flexibility, as well as operational safety.
