SamueLNG project

The S/F SamuelLNG project, which began in Gijon, Spain on 12 December, aims to improve the sustainability of marine traffic through the use of LNG.

SamueLNG is a EU co-funded CEF project which aims to use the environmentally-friendly and cost-effective gas as an alternative to conventional ship fuels for smaller vessels.

It will also help fulfill the objectives of the IMO’s implementation of the 0.5% global sulphur cap on marine fuel by 2020, by achieving two key EU Directives.

Over the next three years, the SamueLNG Project will undertake many LNG bunkering studies including a risk assessment in the port of Nantes Saint-Nazaire, a mobile bunkering unit in the Port of Gijon, a floating device in the Port of Vigo and Environmental Impact Assessment studies in the Ports of Rouen, Le Havre and Nantes Saint-Nazaire.

It will also cover many key activities including the retrofit DP’s Samuel de Champlain, an 8,500m3 Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger, which currently runs on Marine Gas Oil to a dual fuel engine system.

The SamueLNG Project is coordinated by DP and supported by a solid consortium of 12 partners, from along the Atlantic Arch, representing France, Spain and the Netherlands.

Its working partners include Nantes Saint-Nazaire, Le Havre, Rouen, Port Authority of Gijon and Port Authority of Vigo, as well as two ship engineering and design companies, two energy supply companies, a short sea shipping company and an international dredging association.
