Challenge to Panama Canal

Juan Manuel Santos, President of Columbia, says he is in talks with the Chinese for the construction of 400km of railway line to link the country’s Pacific and Adriatic coasts.

The plan, with an estimated price tag of $US8bil, also includes a new port near Cartagena and an upgrade for Buenaventura facilities. For the Chinese, it means access to Colombia’s raw materials, especially coal.
